Often we are subjected to porn by accident, harassed by the nude popups that accompany our favourite online TV shows when we ahem, watch them legally. But for those who watch it regularly or on occasion, we have a curious question. Is it helpful or harmful to relationships?
The general consensus is split. Many individuals believe that it’s better that their partner watches porn and pleasure themselves in the comfort of their own homes, as it is easier to deal with than any potential physical cheating. A point that we can probably all agree on is that porn is the safer option. But what happens when this person becomes obsessed with the fiction of porn and starts to take it on as reality? As we know, the porn industry involves trained professionals who stage 90% of pornographic clips/movies – yes even the amateurs clips – so buying into this warped vision of sex can only be harmful, right?
Well, others believe that engaging with heated on screen coitus is pivotal in helping to spice up one’s sex life. I’ll be the first to admit to being present in many a ‘girl talk’, with women asking their partner to try something they’d seen online, leaving them with the “whoa, where’d you learn that” face.
Some women go so far to say that porn can be incredibly helpful – a sort of guideline for sexual partners as many men don’t actually know what to do down there. Apparently referring to video 808 titled ‘man with big **** rides woman with huge tits’ is easier to send your partner than the far more genuine “you’re doing it wrong sweetie, a little more to the left”.
Here are some thoughts from the public:
“I think porn can help to inspire new things in the bedroom so I say anything is good in moderation there would only be a problem when either person in the relationship relies on porn to get in the mood or begins to compare their partner with what they see on screen because for the most part porn is exaggerated and staged” – Anonymous
“Personally I don’t think so. If anything I’d love my partner to share that experience with me without judgment. If it helped us grow sexually I’m all for it.” – Anonymous
“Porn is subjective to the person. It’s rooted from insecurities and the world of fantasy. It can either be embraced or cause destruction.” – Anonymous
“It depends where the relationship is at I think, if you do it together it’s helpful, the only time would be harmful if it was used excessively in their own time.” – Anonymous
“Sexual gratification is never harmful in a relationship. You can explore fantasies – or sometimes you just want to go solo. I say watch it together, it’s sexy” – Anonymous
“I don’t think it’s harmful but it depends how much it’s being watched and whether the person realises it isn’t realistic because that’s where things can go wrong”. – Anonymous
Personally, I feel that porn can be incredibly helpful in relationships although I advise you all to approach this subject with caution. If your partner is open to spicing up the bedroom via online sexual content then by all means – porn safely.
