Enter Adam Hills from the wings.
I don’t know how many of our readers are familiar with the TV show called The Last Leg. It’s a comedic round up of the weekly news, hosted by Adam Hills and starring Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker. The show came to fame during the 2012 Paralympic games and has been very successful ever since, becoming known as one of the most refreshing representations of the news ever. The trio are known for combating the fear surrounding terrorism and exposing political points that they feel need discussing (always in a light hearted manner of course). Adam Hills rant when Katie Hopkins was voted their “Dick-of-the-year” shot to YouTube fame within a matter of hours.
Its claim to social media fame is large, and the show has a huge Twitter following.
I’m currently sitting in my pyjamas watching Friday’s episode on demand, and I think this is something that everyone needs to know about, so here goes.
The topic of discussion was the budget that the conservatives announced this week, which means no more maintenance grants for students, people with three children get less help, and there is no living wage or benefits for anyone under 25 (making life generally quite a bit more difficult for quite a few more people).
Adam Hills said this:
“Once again the most vulnerable people in society are the ones who will be hit the hardest. And since it’s been revealed that people have been helping each other out less than they were seven years ago, I think it’s time for us all to step up.”
He came up with an idea for a hashtag: #legup, which is designed to be an online movement. As he said “If the government are going to be dicks, we need to be anti-dicks.”
So here’s the idea, if you need something or can help out with something, tweet with the #legup hashtag so we can all start helping each other. There are already thousands of people tweeting their free help finding you a job, sprucing up your CV or helping you build an online marketing platform. There are also people tweeting their fundraising pages and just this morning I have voted online to help a woman who tweeted to win a wheelchair.
So if you’re stuck and need some help, tweet with the hashtag, and if you have a spare hour have a little search and see if anyone could use your help today.
Let’s keep this hashtag moving for as long as possible to see how many people we can help out by ourselves without the government.
Seeing this take off really brightened my week after finding out that I might be earning very little until I am 25 or that I might not be able to claim any sort of benefits regardless of my circumstances for the next five years. So like Adam Hills said:
